I leave this comment regarding the posting advertising a position of Administrative Assistant for $13-$15 per hour for 6-8 hours a week with a 1-3 year commitment. The post details an extensive list of qualifications and skills, demands and tasks in a wide range of arenas. I assume that the job is now being adequately to well performed for 6-8 hours of active (paid) work per week. I don’t see how that is possible–but admittedly I”m on the outside. Surely it is good meaningful work. Surely worth at least a minimum of $15.00 per hour. This person will earn between $416-480 per mo. before taxes and such are deducted. Perhaps we should demonstrate that we believe in living wages. I urge you to consider a salary commensurate with the demands and expertise sought for this position. Let’s live our values, actively holding up what is just in our society. I find it very unfortunate that many ‘justice and activist’ organizations pay minimum (or sub minimum) wages. Should we not value our work and workers more? If we seek dedicated, quality staffing but pay the lowest wages for it are we doing justice? Perhaps I am seeing this wrongly. I stand with justice. Living wages. Supporting our justice work justly.
