Letter Writing to NoDAPL Political Prisoners (Online)

    April 6, 2021  4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
    Online (Register Below)

Join the Unitarian Universalist Association, UU Ministry For Earth, UU Service Committee and Love Resists for a letter writing campaign to show solidarity with Steve Martinez, a NoDAPL political prisoner who has been recently incarcerated after refusing to face a grand jury for a second time. Steve, an Indigenous water protector, was first subpoenaed to a federal grand jury in 2017 for his participation in the NoDAPL resistance movement and refused to comply then as now. This recent targeting came as a disconcerting surprise to many who have been supporting water protector political prisoners for the past four years. On the call, hear from Water Protectors and UU organizers about Steve’s current legal situation, and write your own letter to Steve and other NoDAPL political prisoners.

Another way to support is to DONATE to Steve Martinez’s GoFundMe.

  • ■ Sacred Land, Sacred Spaces

    Sacred Land, Sacred Spaces

    April 7, 2021  11:00 am - 12:00 pm
    Zoom Conference

Put on by the Catholic Climate Covenant

Listening to, learning from, and accompanying Native American peoples in the spirit of Laudato Si’

Pope Francis wrote in Laudato Si’, “[I]t is essential to show special care for indigenous communities and their cultural traditions. They are not merely one minority among others, but should be the principal dialogue partners, especially when large projects affecting their land are proposed. For them, land is not a commodity but rather a gift from God and from their ancestors who rest there, a sacred space with which they need to interact if they are to maintain their identity and values. When they remain on their land, they themselves care for it best.” [i]  He further stated in 2018, “How much we can learn from them! The lives of indigenous peoples “are a living memory of the mission that God has entrusted to us all: the protection of our common home.”[ii]

In the spirit of encounter—a hallmark of this papacy—and as we seek to carry forth with indigenous peoples on this continent, expressed in the aspiration of the Synod on the Amazon:  “It is incumbent upon all of us to be custodians of God's work. The protagonists of the care, protection and defence of the rights of peoples and the rights of nature in this region are the Amazon communities themselves. They are the agents of their own destiny, of their own mission. In this scenario, the role of the Church is to be an ally.  The role of the Church is to strengthen this capacity of support and participation.” [iii]

We need you for a few hours, and we will train you and give you a script and lots of support.

We've been doing this phonebank for weeks, and it's so much fun! If you've been nervous to try phonebanking... we are calling neighbors who are eager to have this convo, and already probably agree, and we are asking them to take action. Find the joy that being in movement can bring.

    Film: The Homestretch

    April 18, 2021  4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
    Online (See Below)

    Film: The Homestretch

The Homestretch follows three homeless teens as they fight to stay in school, graduate, and build a future. Each of these smart, ambitious teenagers - Roque, Kasey and Anthony - will surprise, inspire, and challenge audiences to rethink stereotypes of homelessness as they work to complete their education while facing the trauma of being alone and abandoned at an early age. Through haunting images, intimate scenes, and first-person narratives, these teens take us on their journeys of struggle and triumph. As their stories unfold, the film connects us deeply with larger issues of poverty, race, juvenile justice, immigration, foster care, and LGBTQ rights.

Film/Discussion: The Race to Save the World (Online)

    April 25, 2021  1:00 pm - 3:30 pm
    Online (See Below)

"The Race To Save The World" is a climate change film like no other. Instead of focusing on paralyzing facts and numbers this inspiring feature takes a unique approach by following passionate activists, ages 15-72, who are in the trenches fighting for a livable future. These brave climate warriors put their lives on the line to push for change, regardless of the personal cost. Emmy award-winning filmmaker Joe Gantz brings an urgent and intimate portrait of the protests, arrests, courtroom drama and family turmoil these activists endure as they single mindedly focus their attention on the goal of creating a more sustainable world for future generations. "The Race To Save The World" is an inspiring and energizing call-to-action to quit waiting on the sidelines and make our voices heard.

More info and a link to purchase your ticket is HERE.

When you purchase your ticket you'll receive access to watch the film online anytime between April 22 and April 30th, but if possible we hope you'll watch it at our Watch Party on the 25th.  Immediately following the Watch Party will be a panel discussion, with activists from the film including Bill Moyer, Michael Foster, Abby Brockway, and others. Can't make it that day? You can access the recording afterward.
