Misleading Name for Anti-Muslim Group: “Alliance of Persecuted People Worldwide” (APPWW).

August 6, 2020 by webmaster Leave a Comment

An important notice from Elizabeth Maupin of the IssaquahSammamishInterfaithCoalition,

Friends, deception is a major issue in our times.  Sometimes we are presented with legislation with misleading titles, and sometimes with organizations with misleading names.  One of those organizations is a group called “Alliance of Persecuted People Worldwide” (APPWW). Unfortunately, a careful look at their website and the comments of their supporters indicates that this group is actually promoting the persecution of Muslims.

Over 100 organizations (both regional, and national) have joined in issuing a comprehensive public statement exposing the hate, racism and Islamophobia by APPWW and its leaders. The signatories reflect a broad and respectable mix of groups representing Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Atheists/Agnostics, Ambedkarites (Dalit), BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) communities, immigrants/refugees, and more.  Please read the public statement here: www.tinyurl.com/APPWWStatement, and supporting documentation here:  www.tinyurl.com/APPWWAppendix.

“Alliance of Persecuted People Worldwide” (APPWW), presented to the Redmond City Council on March 3, 2020, claiming to support persecuted peoples worldwide, seeking visibility and support, without revealing that its leaders and organization in fact advance dangerous anti-Muslim and hateful rhetoric, which has divided India and which hurts ALL of our communities, especially communities of faith.  Those who promote hatred and seek vengeance destroy their own souls.  Let us take this opportunity to confront those who are being seduced and poisoned by these wolves in sheep’s clothing, before more are deceived by a misleading name or infected by their divisive spirit.

Some of these concerns about APPWW were in fact shared with the Redmond City Council in June; and yet, Council President Tanika Padhye joined APPWW for an event on July 12, 2020.  Why did the Redmond Council President participate in an event by an organization spreading hate, racism and Islamophobia in our community?  Was this intentional, or a lack of due diligence, simply taking things at face value without checking to see if the group lives up to its name?  The Redmond Council owes the community an explanation and apology, at the least.

Now, with this information clearly brought to our attention about who and what this group and its leaders represent, let us educate others to ensure that no City sponsorship, support or funding is provided to APPWW or its leaders.  To take a strong stance against this kind of hate and those who promote it, you may sign the form here:  www.tinyurl.com/WeCondemnAPPWW (individually) or www.tinyurl.com/CondemnAPPWW (organizationally).
