That’s right! For years now, Washington state has ranked as having the number one worst tax code in the entire country!
It’s beyond time that our absurd state tax structure was turned right side up. We need a tax structure that works for low- and moderate-income people, not just wealthy people. That’s why this upcoming Thursday, March 21, we are gathering in Olympia to demand change and action from our lawmakers. At the rally, we will be calling on lawmakers to fund and modernize the Working Families Tax Credit (WFTC). If the WFTC is funded, that will mean that about a million low- and moderate-income households in Washington will get a tax refund of about $350, thereby boosting families’ economic security and taking important steps to fix our broken tax system.
In Washington state, the more money you make, the less money you ultimately pay in taxes. In fact, families making the least pay up to six times more as a share of their income in taxes compared with people who make the most. For example: if you are someone living on a low income and making $24,000 a year, you’re paying about 18% of your income in taxes. But if you’re someone living very comfortably in tax bracket for high earners, you’re only paying 3% of your income in taxes.
If that seems unbalanced, unfair, or upside down, that’s because it is.
The rally will be held at the state capitol from 12-1 PM on March 21. If you need assistance getting to Olympia, reach us at 206-694-6794. We will be chartering a bus leaving our office in Seattle the morning of the rally. Limited space is available, so let us know ASAP.
Busy that day? That’s okay, you can still let lawmakers know that they need to prioritize passing the Working Families Tax Credit this session. Send them an email using our online template here.
