WhiteSwan Environmental, a local Native group, is requesting our assistance in helping bring more recognition of indigenous perspectives to the care and management of the San Juan Islands Monument. A commenting period, which ends January 3, 2019 is open for public comment and we are being asked to comment and request that more indigenous representation be included in the development and maintenance of the Monument. This is not just representation by indigenous communities, but also representation of ancestral occupation including designating ancestral sites like the reef net sites, installing a long house/museum or visitors center, etc. Other examples are provided on the WhiteSwan Environmental website.
Comment from Whiteswan Environmental: “WE have been told to “DREAM BIG, DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE COST.” On behalf of our 7th sustainability, please dream big for Coast Salish restoration.”
