WA Low Income Housing Alliance Weekly Webinars, 10:00 am Wednesdays

July 1, 2020 by webmaster Leave a Comment

The WA Low Income Housing Alliance works toward the opportunity for all Washington residents to live in safe, healthy, affordable homes in thriving communities. They sponsor a weekly webinar to highlight work and provide action points on these issues.

Examples of recent/coming meetings: Marc Dones  joined us July 1st to share about the newly formed Center on Housing Justice, an arm of the National Innovation Service that will focus on dismantling structural racism inside our nation’s housing and homeless service systems, and redesigning toward an equitable future! On July 8th, we’ll be joined by Lowel Krueger from the Yakima Housing Authority and Amber Johnson from SNAP to discuss how COVID-19 is impacting their tenants.

If you would like to submit a question ahead of the call, please use this form to do so! We will do our very best to answer your questions during the call or in follow-up correspondence.

You can register for the call at this link, or by clicking the button above. After registering, you should receive a confirmation email with the call-in information and a password. If for some reason you do not, please email John at johns@wliha.org to make sure you get it.

Backbone Campaign Fundamental Right to Food Events, June 26, July 1, online

June 24, 2020 by webmaster Leave a Comment

Illuminated by the promise of sunshine in the corner of the picture, a young seedling reeives drips of water pouring from the fingertips of an upturned hand.Food is a basic need, and healthy local food should be a fundamental right. At the heart of the food system is the seed.  Our current food system is so broken – in most all ways.

Join Backbone for two events, this Friday and next Wednesday. We will talk about the effects of racism and colonization on our food system and how those oppressive systems relate to growing a garden and saving your seeds.

Scroll down for detailed info on each virtual event and to register.

1. Backbone is honored and grateful to host a conversation with Farmers Lawrence Jenkins and Aleta Haskins, of The Circle of Life Gardens: Friday, June 26th, 11:30am (Pacific).

2. Following on our Conversation is a Virtual Workshop on Seed Saving: Wednesday, July 1st, 4pm (Pacific).

Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery – Screening #2

June 21, 2020 by webmaster Leave a Comment

During the last two weeks people of conscience across the globe are speaking, and gathering together to address the pervasive oppression that has been a daily reality for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color for centuries. We know that the roots of these injustices go deep and are a part of the Code of Domination that we were fortunate to discuss last month with Steven Newcomb and his daughter Shawna Bluestar Newcomb.
We are grateful that you have registered for tomorrow’s gathering about Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery! Sunday, June 7th, from 12 noon – 2 pm PST we will screen the film The Doctrine of Discovery: Unmasking the Domination Code.  Following the film we’ll be joined by Washington State leaders working on dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery including Pat Rasmussen, Jonathan Neufeld, and Deb Cruz.  Each will offer a brief presentation followed by a Q & A session.
Learning Right Relations invites you to this Zoom meeting.  Please click on the link ahead of time; remembering that Zoom now requires that their software be updated May 30.

Remember to invite others to register.  This film is not widely available.
We look forward to your presence at June’s first LRR Gathering.  Mark your calendar for a second film being shown Jun 21, 2020 at 1 pm: The Indian System.  Producer/Director Sheldon Wolfchild will be joining us to talk about the film and related on-going issues yet faced by the Dakota Tribes.

Breaking News: Supreme Court Upholds DACA, for now

June 18, 2020 by webmaster Leave a Comment

From Northwest Immigrant Rights Project

We are thrilled to share that this morning, the Supreme Court rejected the Trump Administration’s attempt to end the DACA program, finding that the Administration did not follow proper legal procedures in ending the program. This decision means that the DACA program can continue for now and that hundreds of thousands of immigrant youth will remain protected from deportation.

While we are very happy with this decision, the Court’s decision indicated that the Administration still has the authority to end DACA.

As such, we urge the Administration to put politics aside and choose to continue the DACA program. The lives of DACA recipients, their livelihoods, and their contributions to our communities are at stake. We urge the Administration to make clear that it will abandon its attempts to terminate the program. At the same time, we know that DACA does not provide a pathway to citizenship and so we urge Congress to do what it should have done long ago and pass a clean version of the Dream Act.

We are still processing the impact of the decision and will continue to provide information on its impact to community members over the coming days.

BLACK LIVES MATTER CALLS FOR STATEWIDE SILENT MARCH AND GENERAL STRIKE ON FRIDAY, JUNE 12, 2020

June 11, 2020 by webmaster Leave a Comment

Black Lives Matter Seattle-King County is calling for a statewide day of action in support of all Black lives in Washington State on Friday, June 12th. The day of action will include a general strike and a silent march to mourn the lives lost to police brutality and institutional racism. For those who can’t march in Seattle, we encourage local groups to organize a march in their communities.

We know that not everyone can attend a march for various reasons. Black Lives Matter Seattle-King County has made it very clear they don’t want to put people at risk in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. So for those who can’t participate in a physical gathering, they urge you to participate in the general strike and in actions they post online throughout the day.
